Where to live in Vietnam for a month: Da Nang, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi or Da Lat

The quick answer. For a first month that combines the sea, ordinary city life and remote work without making a motorbike essential, choose Da Nang. Choose Ho Chi Minh City for big-city services, work and endless district choice. Hanoi suits people who value culture, seasons and a dense urban day over the beach. Nha Trang works when you want a bay and promenade in daily life and the sea season fits your dates. Da Lat is for cool weather, greenery and a quiet routine, not a beach or metropolitan services.

Compare cities on two axes: what must be close to home on an ordinary workday, and what you can give up. A beach does not fix an awkward schedule, and a cheaper apartment far from daily needs does not make a month easier.

Da Nang: the smoothest first month

Da Nang makes daily life simple: morning beach walk, work café, food, delivery, market and airport can sit in one practical base. My An and An Thuong often suit people who want cafés and the shore on foot; closer to the centre can work better for routine city errands. Test any building in morning and evening: a sea view says nothing about construction noise, lift reliability, kitchen or Wi-Fi.

It is not the city for someone seeking the biggest meeting scene or specialised service on every block. Heat and rainy months change the daily rhythm. It is a strong stable base, not a promise of identical beach weather year-round.

Nha Trang: sea beside city life

Choose Nha Trang when the beach and promenade should be part of an ordinary day, not an occasional excursion. Compare actual streets, not just the map: one part of the coast can be convenient for food and walks while another is quieter but farther from daily errands. Before a longer lease, walk home → grocery shop → work spot → beach after dark.

The key limit is the season and sea conditions on your dates. If swimming is central, confirm current conditions rather than relying on a summer image. The busiest promenade can feel too tourist-focused for a quiet month, so look beyond it when residential calm matters.

Ho Chi Minh City: when the month should be full

Ho Chi Minh City offers choice: food, work, meetings, delivery, airport access and many housing styles. District 1 puts you close to activity; Phú Nhuận and Bình Thạnh can shorten ordinary airport and city trips; Thảo Điền is often chosen for a calmer, international rhythm. These are starting points, not a district ranking—test the actual route to your meetings and services in peak traffic.

Distance costs time here, especially in rain and congestion. The city cannot replace Da Nang or Nha Trang if you need the sea every morning. It is the best fit when work, services and the ability to change plans locally matter more.

Hanoi and Da Lat: choose atmosphere deliberately

Choose Hanoi for lakes, old quarters, museums, coffee, food and urban texture. The Old Quarter is practical for a short stay but can be noisy; Tây Hồ offers more space around West Lake; Ba Đình and Hoàn Kiếm work for central daily life. Hanoi has real seasons: damp cool winters and hot, humid summers. Check daily air conditions before selecting a district when a child, asthma or outdoor exercise matter.

Choose Da Lat to leave tropical heat behind and work quietly among hills and greenery. It is good for reading, focused work and walks, but hills turn a short map distance into a difficult grocery trip. Check slope, lighting, delivery access, connection and rain noise before renting. It has no beach and fewer large-city services.

Nha Trang and Da Lat need a building- and district-specific estimate. See the monthly budget guide for the full basket; do not carry rent from one city into another without accounting for transport, utilities and routine.

Trial week before a long lease

  1. Walk to coffee, water, groceries and transport in the morning.
  2. Take two video calls from the apartment and listen for noise.
  3. Return after 21:00 to check light, parking and street activity.
  4. Test the route in rain or heat.
  5. Ask about electricity pricing, water, internet, cleaning, deposit and exit terms before payment.
