What a Vietnam trip and a month of living cost: ready-made budgets

The quick answer. For one person, seven nights in Vietnam excluding the international flight usually cost VND 11–16 million (≈ US$423–615) on a lean plan, VND 20–30 million (≈ US$769–1,154) with a comfortable hotel and daily transport, or VND 31–48 million (≈ US$1,192–1,846) for a multi-city trip with domestic flights and activities. A month for one person costs about VND 18–25 million (≈ US$692–962) in Da Nang or VND 22–30 million (≈ US$846–1,154) in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on a simple routine. For a comfortable apartment-based month, plan VND 31–43 million (≈ US$1,192–1,654) in Da Nang and VND 36–52 million (≈ US$1,385–2,000) in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. These are September 2026 planning ranges, excluding international flights, visa fees and medical insurance.

The figures assume one adult renting alone, eating mostly Vietnamese food, using Grab and local transport, and not renting a motorbike. A couple does not need to double the amount: shared accommodation and some rides mean adding roughly 40–65% to one person’s monthly plan. A comfortable month for two adults and one child is usually VND 55–80 million (≈ US$2,115–3,077) before school and international flights.

Seven nights: three usable budgets

Add your international ticket, insurance, visa if required and checked baggage. Two people sharing one room can often do a comfortable week for VND 31–45m (≈ US$1,192–1,731) before international flights.

Budget VND 150–300k per day for airport rides, evening Grab trips and rain. City public transport is far cheaper—roughly VND 7–10k for a single ticket in the current city snapshot—but it does not replace every airport or late-night ride. A cheap domestic ticket can still become expensive after baggage, station transfers and an extra night.

Use the upper end for a new building near the beach or centre, a short contract, daily air conditioning, deliveries, imported food, coworking and frequent cross-city rides. In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, a cheaper apartment far from your daily destinations often simply moves the saving into Grab and time. Ask whether electricity, water, internet, cleaning and parking are included before paying.

Cash needed on move-in day

The month’s cost is not the same as the amount you need available at the start. Add a deposit of half to one month’s rent, your first transfer, SIM and household purchases. With VND 14m rent, a one-month deposit and VND 2m for setup, a sensible starting balance is about VND 30m (≈ US$1,154) before ordinary monthly spending. The deposit may be returned, but it stays unavailable until checkout; keep the contract, meter photos and messages.

Three concrete examples

Hanoi and Da Nang, seven nights

VND 550k × 7 for simple hotels = VND 3.85m; food at VND 400k × 7 = VND 2.8m; Hanoi–Da Nang with baggage and transfers = VND 2.5m; local transport = VND 1.2m; SIM, two admissions and reserve = VND 2.65m. Total: about VND 13m (≈ US$500), before the flight to Vietnam and insurance.

One month in Da Nang

VND 12m apartment + VND 1.8m utilities and internet + VND 8.5m food and coffee + VND 1.2m transport + VND 3.5m phone, laundry, gym and leisure + VND 3m reserve = VND 30m (≈ US$1,154). With a VND 12m deposit, have about VND 42m (≈ US$1,615) accessible at arrival, plus flight and insurance.

Couple in Ho Chi Minh City

VND 18m apartment + VND 2.5m utilities + VND 17m food + VND 3.5m transport + VND 7m household and leisure + VND 5m reserve = VND 53m (≈ US$2,038) for two, before deposit.

Make the range yours

Start with the closest scenario and replace only accommodation for your dates, your international flight and each domestic leg. Keep the other lines as provision until you have quotes. If your total is below the lower bound, check for baggage, airport transfers, deposit, electricity, insurance and reserve. If it is above the upper bound, reduce moves and accommodation class before cutting food, connectivity or medical cover.
