Sa Pa is a mountain town above rice terraces in northwest Vietnam. Fansipan (3,143 m), the region’s highest peak, rises over the valley.
A roughly 6 km cable car reaches the summit area in about 15 minutes; a pagoda complex and final steps lead to the peak. Nearby are walking trails, Cát Cát and Tả Phìn villages, markets and homestays. Choose local guides and respectful, community-based visits.
Vietnam Tourism highlights September–October for the terraces and April–May for clearer skies. Fog and cold can change high-altitude views. From Hà Nội, buses or shuttles take about 5–6 hours, or take an overnight train to Lào Cai and transfer up the mountain.
