Open map
Begin at Hoan Kiem Lake, then head north into the Old Quarter, where narrow streets and shop houses sit alongside small temples, cafés and street-food stalls. Walking here is a way to experience Hanoi's everyday rhythm, not just tick off individual landmarks.

Circle the lake on foot: the route takes in the red Huc Bridge, Ngoc Son Temple and Turtle Tower. Allow about 1.5–2 hours for an unhurried visit. Early morning and late afternoon are especially pleasant by the water. Traffic arrangements and pedestrian zones in the centre can change, so check local signs and current notices.

The streets are busy: take care when crossing and be respectful at active places of worship. Ngoc Son Temple may have separate visiting hours and an admission fee; confirm the current conditions before you go.
