The Ha Giang Loop is a multi-day route through northern Vietnam’s mountains, in today’s Tuyen Quang Province. The road winds among the karst peaks and valleys of the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark, linking highland settlements and markets. One of its most striking sections is Ma Pi Leng Pass, overlooking the deep gorge of the Nho Que River.
The journey offers more than scenery: visitors can encounter local community life, try regional food and stay in family-run homestays. Rice fields and buckwheat flowers color the slopes in autumn; the landscape changes in other seasons. Vietnam Tourism describes the loop as a multi-day route and recommends travelling with a local driver: its narrow, winding mountain roads demand experience and attention.
Allow several days and check current road and weather conditions, transport, access rules for border areas, driving documents and insurance in advance. Ride independently only with suitable experience and a valid licence for the vehicle. A guided trip or local driver lets you focus on the views.
