Hanoi Events
In Hanoi, an evening can begin with a street performance by Hoan Kiem Lake and continue with a concert or theatre show, while a weekend might take in an exhibition and a book fair. The capital’s events range from national celebrations to independent creative projects and small gatherings, with reasons to join in whether you are visiting briefly or living in the city.
City Celebrations, Festivals and Exhibitions
Major cultural programmes accompany Tet, Vietnam’s National Day on 2 September and Hanoi Liberation Day on 10 October. Concerts, historical exhibitions and festive performances offer a view of how the capital marks dates of national significance. The pedestrian area around Hoan Kiem also hosts music and cultural events; programmes and venues depend on the individual announcement.
Another side of the city’s events is represented by the Hanoi Creative Design Festival and Hanoi Book Fair. Design exhibitions, installations, craft projects and creative workshops explore contemporary approaches to the city’s heritage. Book events offer a chance to discover publishers and go beyond the usual Old Quarter sightseeing route.
Symphony Concerts, Jazz and Water Puppet Theatre
For classical music, look to the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, whose concert programmes include performances at the Grand Concert Hall of the Vietnam National Academy of Music. Jazz offers a more intimate format. Binh Minh Jazz Club musicians have taken part in the city’s “Weekend Music” project by Hoan Kiem, bringing professional performances beyond their usual indoor settings.
Thăng Long Water Puppet Theatre near the lake introduces a different stage tradition: small puppets act out scenes of rural life and folklore to live music. A performance can be part of a family outing. Unlike a one-off festival, the theatre has its own show schedule; check the session and ticket availability before visiting.
